Erectile Dysfunction
What is erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction is the persistent inability for a man to achieve and/or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity. This condition is widespread, affecting more than 100 million men worldwide.
Erectile dysfunction is not something to be embarrassed about. Erectile dysfunction is a treatable condition in most men who have it. While it is not a life-threatening condition even when it is severe, it may have a very significant impact on a man's self-image and a couple's relationship.
Can erectile dysfunction be treated?
Yes. The good news is that regardless of the cause, the majority of cases of erectile dysfunction are treatable. Patients now have a variety of treatment options from which to choose, and should discuss these options with their doctor.
Tri-Mix or VIAGRA®?
Although most people have heard of VIAGRA®, it's important to know that it isn't for everyone. If you're a man who uses nitrate drugs, like GTN, (drugs commonly used for the treatment of chest pains) never take VIAGRA® with any nitrate medicine, your blood pressure could suddenly drop to an unsafe or life threatening level.
There is a safer alternative for men on nitrate therapy. Intracavernosal injection (“penile injection”) to produce erection was introduced in the 1980s. It is a therapy prescribed throughout the world for ED. The most common agents used today include prostaglandin, papaverine, and phentolamine. These are known as “Tri-mix”.
